Olbrich Gardens in Madison is a nationally recognized botanical park along Starkweather Creek near the shores of Lake Monona. During the spring and summer it dazzles with florid colors. But, winter is bleak - even in the gardens.

Fortunately, no matter what the season, Olbrich offers a special indoor garden for the display of tropical plants and flowers. The Bolz Conservatory offers a chance to escape whatever oppressive weather Wisconsin can serve up. For two dollars you can walk past waterfalls and beneath a canopy of palms and listen to chirp of free roaming exotic birds. This often overlooked attraction is not just a local treasure, but a necessary tool for surviving soul draining Wisconsin winters.

Gray and windy days. Frozen chunks of soot stained snow alongside the road. Leafless trees creaking in the frigid air. Winter has overstayed its welcome ... as always. It begins magically, charming us with snowflakes and family gatherings. But, the longer winter remains the colder and uglier it becomes. It bleeds the color our of everything; leaving a joyless monochromatic landscape.

There is little to do that does not require steeling your nerves in a Wisconsin Winter. Going to the grocery store can be an epic journey fraught with peril. With that in mind, many Wisconsinites plan winter vacations to their favorite tropical paradise. But, for those who cannot fly away there are still some psychological escapes in the State. Here are a few ideas: The Mitchel Park Domes, The Milwaukee or Madison Public Zoos' aviaries, The University of Wisconsin Greenhouses, and Olbrich Gardens' Bloz Conservatory in Madison
