Merrrimac Ferry - Colsac III

The Merrimac Ferry
The Merrimac Ferry, or Colsac III makes continuous trips to and from Merrimac through the Spring, Summer, and Fall on Lake Wisconsin. The ferry has been in operation since 1884. It is operated by the the State DOT and is fee free for cars and pedestrians to use while traveling on highway 113 as a route between Lodi and Merrimac. This is a popular route for accessing Devil's Lake State Park and Wisconsin Dells. A concession stand on either side of the crossing serves popcorn, snacks, and ice cream made in Madison WI.

Somehow, this frail and mostly uninteresting village has clung to life like a disapproving mother-in-law. As hard as it may be to fathom, Merrimac is in fact at a critical crossroads - and has been for generations.

First and always the ferry, then the railroad, and now a national hiking trail.  With the construction of a nearby expressway which demonstrated the ease in which the river/lake could be crossed without the antique amusement of waiting for a cable guided pontoon to load and unload, one would have thought this important river crossing would also have been bridged thereby definitively casting Merrimac into history.

But, for lack of reason - a few nostalgic hanger-oners will not let go. They keep bringing their children back to Merrimac to honor the holy pilgrimage of the Wisconsin weekend holiday - a tradition rapidly becoming as unfashionable as a brandy old-fashioned sour ... but a tradition that clings to "relevance" like the vinyl record collection of a Madison hipster.
