At 98 miles linear the Gandy Dancer is among Wisconsin's longest bike and ATV trails. It is divided into two segments: Southern, and Northern. The Southern Segment spans between Interstate State Park in St. Croix Falls and Danbury where the Gandy Dancer crosses the St. Croix River into Minnesota. The Northern Segment runs from Danbury to Pattison State Park in Superior. This northern segment is more appropriate for ATV's and less so for bikes - but a good mountain bike will handle the gravel road of the Northern Segment.
Primarily, bikers use the Southern Segment. In and around St. Croix Falls the path is paved with asphalt. That gives way to a wide crushed stone trail for the remaining miles of the Southern Segment. There are many cafes and restaurants in the trail towns on the Southern Segment - Centuria even has a popular diner named the Gandy Diner just a block off the trail. The Southern Segment is well serviced with parks, parking, restrooms, lodging and camping; however, parking lots and services on the Northern Segment are far and few between.
The Ice Age National Scenic Trail includes a portion of the trail from St. Croix Falls to Luck as the Gandy Dancer Segment of the Ice Age Trail.
