The Dune Cordwalk Trail is a 1.3 mile linear footpath through the Kohler Dunes State Natural Area at Kohler-Andrae State Park in Sheboygan. This unusual trail is surfaced with a string of cord wood planks pinned into sand dunes. The strange landscape of shifting ground makes walking this trail feel like exploring a distant planet.

It's easy for those who are unfamiliar with Wisconsin to see photography of Kohler-Andrea beach and mistake it for an oceanside retreat in New England. Or,else, they mistake this place of wild thrushes and interdunal wetlands for manicured golf courses. The people of Sheboygan have got it good. Their community has miles of idyllic beaches buffered by a monumental dune landscape. This is a beach community - a Great Lake beach community.
It is every bit as laid back here as you would expect a beach community to be. There's something about the rhythmic waves, the cool clean breeze, and the sand grains that blow into our shoes at beach destinations that hypnotizes us into a state of welcoming relaxation.
The Dunes Trail at Kohler Andrae is one of the most important hiking trails in Wisconsin. It will always make my top ten state hikes list - even if it is short at 1.3 miles linear. The rolling and sculpted landscape of the dunes here is unlike any I have ever visited before. At one moment you are perched at the top of a high dune with panoramic views of rolling green dunes and the endless blue of Lake Michigan. A moment later you are lost at the bottom of a dune valley - with all but the blue sky above closed in by the ubiquitously formless dunes. At one point on my walk I had the distinct feeling that I had just landed on Mars.
This truly unique experience will delight and capture the imagination of all who take the time to walk the Dunes Trail. It is a comfortable walk for everyone from toddlers to mature adults. It might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, or perhaps you will make a tradition out of visiting the dunes at Kohler Andrae.
