Ice Age Trail - Clover Valley Segment

Along the Clover Valley Segment of the Ice Age National Trail
The Clover Valley Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a brief 1.64-mile easy trail in a quiet rural setting between Milton and Whitewater WI. The trail is mostly flat, with a few mild rolling hills on its west end. Most of the trail tracks in straight lines through wetlands and a state wildlife area.

It can be very soggy in spring between March and mid-May. The modest Spring Creek, which may not be more than a trickle in late summer and fall, is the trail's only memorable land feature. Otherwise, it is a serene and quiet walk - a great place to listen to birds chirp. The area is also home to cranes who's Jurassic cackle echo from somewhere deep in the marsh.

The Clover Valley Segment is a lonely section of the IAT separated by miles of treacherous rural road hikes in each direction. To the west is the Storrs Lake Segment of Rock County and to the east is the Whitewater Segment of Walworth County. The Clover Valley trail crosses a small brook at the Rock/Walworth county line.

This section offers expansive wetland views. Walkers will get into the shade of a small woods set on mildly rolling hills. There is not a part of this trail that is difficult; however, I found out that it can be quite squishy and wet with several mud traps in April. I suspect that the trail is dry most months save for March, April, and May. Some boardwalks are offered in routinely wet areas, and equipment was ready to be assembled into more boardwalk by trail volunteers sometime in 2016.

In spite of its short and mild mileage I enjoyed the walk at Clover Valley. It was a beautiful day to be out away from crowds and noise.
