Amnicon Upper Falls at Amnicon State Park WI
|
If waterfalls are your passion then Amnicon Falls State Park is your paradise.
Amnicon is home to four scenic waterfalls featured on a half-mile loop trail
in the heart of the park: The Upper Amnicon Falls, Lower Amnicon Falls, Snake
Pit Falls, and Now and Then Falls.
An additional 1-mile loop trail, the Thimbleberry Trail, explores the park and
the scenic Amnicon River further. The Thimbleberry isn't as frequently hiked
as the island trail, but visitors to Amnicon State Park should be sure not to
miss it; it's one of Wisconsin's most magical trails through a dense and deep
forest and offers views of the lower Amnicon that you won't want to miss. All
of the trails at Amnicon are easy and suitable for hikers of any fitness
level.

The hikes at Amnicon Falls are short, but pack a nice package of scenic
delights. It's an easy destination for a picnic and a brief escape into Up-North
Wisconsin wilderness. The Upper Falls, Lower Falls, and Now and Then Falls are
immediately accessible from the parking areas. Cross the covered bridge to an
island between branches of the Amnicon and you'll find a loop trail that takes
hikers to Snake Pit Falls.
After snapping some selfies in front of the namesake waterfalls head up to the
family camping area where you'll find the trailhead for the Thimbleberry Trail.
This 1-mile loop trail cuts through dense pine and paper birch forest with a
forest floor blanketed in ferns. It's a delightful walk, and you'll hardly have
worked up a sweat before it is finished. The Thimbleberry also includes some
overlooks of the fast-moving Amnicon River and an old quarry.
If you're into waterfalls and still aren't satisfied with Amnicon's four
excellent falls then head over to
Pattison State Park
which is just a half-hour drive away. Pattison features two larger waterfalls
including Big Manitou Falls which is Wisconsin's tallest.
