Hiking the Ice Age Trail Straight River Segment

The Straight River Trail is an easy 3.3-mile linear segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Much of the trail crosses private properties. The trail route includes scenic vistas of Long Lake and the Straight River. There is a disperse campsite available for distance hikers on Long Lake and one on Rainbow Lake at the parking area off 95th street. This trail connects directly to the Pine Lake Segment and via 1/4 mile of road walking to the Straight Lake Segment.

Disperse Camping Area on the Straight Lake Segment of the IAT

The Straight River Segment of the Ice Age Trail is a very pleasant walk in Northern Wisconsin. Its popularity will grow as the new Straight Lake State Park gains visitors. The lengths of the IAT in Polk County are nearly continuous and offer regular rustic camping areas making this collection of trails ideal for backpacking.

Initially, coming off the Straight Lake Segment, the Straight River Segment keeps to breezy ridgelines. There is a quick dip in elevation to cross the Straight River followed by a rapid climb back up to a ridge between Long Lake and the Straight River. You'll find the short spur trail to the Long Lake Disperse Camping Area. The trail then becomes a private road serving some very nicely sited vacation cabins that I am very jealous of.

A brief walk downhill along the fast trafficked highway 48 I cam on a newly installed parking area and disperse camping area. This would be a great place to launch a canoe or drop in a fishing line. There is also a brief white-blazed trail that loops to Moh's Mountian, a hill overlooking the Straight River. The trail continues through forested low areas along the mucky Straight River and finishes by crossing a field to meet the Pine Lake Segment.
