Ice Age Trail Greenwood Segment |
The Greenwood Segment is a 4.6 mile linear section of the Ice Age Trail in Central Wisconsin. Its miles pass through dense hardwood forest, mature white pine plantation, and along the edge of heathy openings and a large square mile of restored prairie. A moderately difficult journey down and out of a 200 foot deep kettle adds a workout to this hike. The Greenwood Segment is separated by short connecting routes on roads from its adjacent segments: The Bohn Lake Segment and the Mecan River Segment.

Ice Age Trail Greenwood Segment |
Meandering along the Almond moraine in Waushara County, the Greenwood Segment packs in a variety of vegetative scenery. The majority of this trail is located in the Greenwood Wildlife Refuge along with a portion on State Ice Age Trail Area. Most of the trail is shaded by stately oaks or tall white pine. But, the trail also skirts the edges of extensive prairies.
A loop trail option blazed in white circles four ponds at the bottom of a deep kettle. Views of the kettle are not very good in summer when the underbrush is thick; winter may be a better time to take advantage of this extra loop. There is also a fairly lengthy spur trail leading to a grassy parking lot on 7th Avenue.
A disperse camping area is not too far away on the northern end of the Mecan River segment.
