Hiking the Ice Age Trail Wedde Creek Segment

Ice Age Trail Wedde Creek Segment

A forest floor carpeted in soft green grass welcomes walkers on the short Wedde Creek segment of the Ice Age Trail. The segment is only 1.2 miles linear and is an easy hike. A small parking lot is accessed from a spur trail. For those who want to put on more miles this segment is easily combined with the Chaffee Creek Segment which begins 3/4 of a mile down Czech road.

I was mindful of horse drawn buggies as I drove through Waushara County into the heart of Amish country. The quiet and peaceful countryside of Waushara is host to many miles of mild and relaxed hiking trails that roll along gentle hills through mixed pine and hardwood forests and extensive native prairies. Among these, the Wedde Creek segment is a one-mile gem.

The smallish Wedde Creek itself can hardly be found except when crossing over an old timber bridge, but it is an important spawning stream. The land surrounding the creek is protected within the Wedde Creek Fishery and the larger Mecan River State Fishery Area. Wedde Creek eventually joins with Chaffee Creek, the Mecan River, and the Fox River which empties into Lake Michigan at Green Bay.

The mild, rolling, and pitted terrain surrounding Wedde Creek exemplifies moraine deposited by the Green Bay lobe and sculpted through multiple advancements and retreats of the late Wisconsin Glaciers. Torrential flooding of meltwater from the retreating glaciers covered the landscape and carved channels, tunnel lake chains, and otherwise moved the earth to its current relief.
