The East Bluff Woods Trail is a network of access roads and hiking trails on the
East Bluff of Devil's Lake State Park. The network of spurs and linear footpaths
adds up to 3-miles total. From the North Shore, the East Bluff Woods Trail rises
500ft over 1.5 miles to meet up with the Balanced Rock and East Bluff trails.
This trail also connects to the Devil's Doorway, Potholes, and Upland Woods
trails.

The East Bluff Woods Trails are often seen as an alternative route for reaching the East Bluff and South Face - alternative to the East Bluff Trail. Hikers should not expect that this trail is easier than the East Bluff. It rises at a steady average slope of 7.4% with an elevation gain of 484 feet over 1.5-miles. These statistics qualify it for a level-5 mountaineering rated climb, the easiest level of mountaineering ratings, nonetheless a rated trail. The trailbed of loose large gravel doesn't make this walk any easier either. If you want to climb the East Bluff you are better-off climbing on the East Bluff Trail which includes stone stairs and panoramic scenery along the way.
But, if you have already seen the sights of Devil's Lake's magnificent bluffs and are in search of a quieter hike through woodlands then East Bluff Woods may be just right for you. With its wide two-track path and less traffic, the East Bluff Woods Trails are better for dog walking and trail running. In winter you may find these trails excellent for cross-country skiing, though I think that downhill skiing might be a better description.
There is one short section of single track trail on this network that bridges between the Uplands Trail connector and an access road from Steinke Basin.
Unless you are looking for quiet solitude in the woods, I (and I don't do this often) do not recommend East Bluff Woods for hiking. There are too many premium hiking trails on the East Bluff to spend your time on an access road that was not crafted with the experience of hikers in mind. But, if you must hike every trail in the park then you will have to hike East Bluff Woods.
