Epic climbs on the East Bluff, West Bluff, and South Face overshadow many of Devil's Lake State Park's other fine hiking trails. The Upland Trail is an easy woodland trail shaded by a vast hardwood forest.

It officially begins at an intersection with the Steinke Basin Trail and Johnson Moraine Loop just east of the Steinke Basin Parking Lot. From there it forms a wide arc before tracing the ridge of the South Face. It officially ends with a connection to the East Woods Trail and a short spur to the CCC trail.

The Upland Trail is shaded by hardwood forest along its length. The path is a wide hardpacked two track dirt trail with some areas of loose gravel for erosion control. It crosses streams a few times over wide wide decked bridges. This trail is ideal for cross-country skiing in the winter as there are not steep hills and it is wide enough to handle two directions of traffic for traditional and skate style skiers. For these same reasons, it works as a good off-road bike trail as well. As a hiking trail it is an easy breezy walk over a gently undulating landscape with long understory views in all directions. Being a multi-use trail, hikers should keep aware of bikers oncomming and from behind. Hike to the right side of the pathway to make way for bikers and runners to pass.

Hiker's that park at Steinke Basin can return on a gravel access road to create a 4.5-mile loop that will take approximately 1 1/2 hours to walk. So, while it is an easy trail terrain to walk, mileage wise it is one of the longer hikes in the park.
